GARDENS OF HAMPSHIRE

The southern county of Hampshire is home to National Parks, country idylls and a beautiful coastline. It is also home to a stunning selection of gardens, many of which are associated with some of the great names in gardening history. We visit three very different gardens, each with their own uniqueness, and an array of beautiful places.

Itinerary

Sunday Departing from our home area we travel to Hampshire with a break for lunch on the way.

Monday This morning we venture into the New Forest National Park and have a scenic tour of this beautiful area. We break in the capital of the forest Lyndhurst before visiting Exbury Gardens. This spectacular two hundred acre woodland garden is famous for the Rothschild collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias.

Tuesday Our day begins in Farnham, a historic market town known for its Georgian streets, historic buildings and craft heritage. Later we visit the Gilbert White and The Oates Collection. A unique house, garden and parklands celebrating the lives of three explorers of the natural world. The historic house was the home of naturalist Gilbert White and the majestic restored garden specialises in eighteenth century plants and gardening methods inspired by Gilbert White.

Wednesday This morning we enjoy time in the historic town of Winchester. There will be time to enjoy a number of its historic gems including the Cathedral or the Great Hall which houses the legendary Arthurian Round Table. After lunch we visit The Vyne, a house filled with family collections of furniture, portraits, textiles and sculptures. The attractive gardens feature an ornamental lake and one of the earliest summerhouses in England.

Thursday After breakfast we leave Basingstoke and break our journey for lunch in the town of Poundbury. This unique place was designed and developed in accordance with the principles established by the Prince of Wales on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. We continue our journey to Cornwall.

CHESTER

Chester is one of our countries best preserved walled cities and each chapter of its history is etched into the very fabric of the city. The central location of our hotel provides a delightful base for independent exploration of the attractions within the city walls and further afield.

Itinerary

Sunday We travel from Cornwall to Chester with a lunch break along the way. A welcome glass of Bucks Fizz will be served before dinner.

Monday This morning make our way to Llangollen. Here we board a horse drawn barge for a relaxing cruise before time to enjoy the pretty wharf area. In the afternoon we return to Chester for free time.

Tuesday Our morning will be spent in Llandudno, a town popular for its sweeping promenade and traditional seaside atmosphere. After lunch we have a scenic journey home stopping in the gateway to Snowdonia, the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed.

Wednesday Today we visit Quarry Bank Mill, a large cotton mill powered by Europe’s largest water wheel. This wonderful industrial community estate offers a view of the very different worlds of owner and worker, who lived and worked here side by side.

Thursday Today begins with a guided tour of Chester. Founded as a Roman fortress in the 1st century A.D, it’s known for its extensive, well-preserved Roman walls, old city and Tudor-style half-timber buildings. The remainder of our day will be at leisure.

Friday After breakfast we sadly leave the Queen Hotel to make the return journey to Cornwall.

Monday Leaving Cornwall we travel to Cambridge to enjoy a hot drink and biscuit’s on arrival.

Tuesday This morning we are off to Cambridge, a historic and cultured city. We meet our guide for a discovery of the main sights ending with a visit to the American Cemetery. Our afternoon is free to take a river punt, visit the colleges or revisit places that we saw earlier.

Wednesday Our first stop today is in the city of Ely. Here we have chance to visit the Cathedral, the stunning ‘ship of the fens’ or take a stroll around the town. Later we head for Bury St Edmunds, a historic jewel famous for the peaceful Abbey Gardens and its connections with Dickens.

Thursday After breakfast we make our way to the superb Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Formerly an RAF base, Duxford is today Europe’s foremost aviation museum and is part of the Imperial War Museum. See its spectacular collection of planes, assortment of related vehicles and fascinating exhibitions.

Friday After breakfast we make the journey home to Cornwall.

WYE VALLEY & GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Between the River Severn and the Welsh borderlands lies the enchanting area of the beautiful Wye Valley. Dotted with historically important towns the enchanting landscapes are preserved as an area of outstanding natural beauty. We traverse the borderlands and step into Gloucestershire to see a variety of interesting attractions.

We return to the three star Bells Hotel which is surrounded by a golf course and located close to the centre of Coleford.

Itinerary

Monday Departing Cornwall in the morning we make our way towards the Severn crossing. We enjoy a lunch break en route and arrive at the Bells Hotel later in the day.

Tuesday We have time in the attractive town of Hereford. Straddling the River Wye, the town is home to a number of rare treasures including Mappa Mundi, housed in the beautiful Cathedral. We have a visit to the chained library to see this world famous treasure. After lunch we visit the market town of Ledbury, known for being a haven for poetry and culture.

Wednesday Our first visit of the day will take us to Gloucester. The National Waterways Museum celebrates the city’s industrial past and we have time to explore this interactive attraction and the regenerated dockside area. In the afternoon we make our way to the historic Lydney Park Estate where the Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Magnolias provide stunning displays.

Thursday Our day will be spent in the lovely Wye Valley. Inspiration to many artists, the area is known for its natural river scenery and wooded expanses. Our day will include a pleasurable cruise past Symonds Yat on the River Wye. We return to Coleford mid afternoon.

Friday After breakfast we leave our hotel and head to Cheddar Gorge where you can explore one of Britain’s most spectacular natural landmarks and have lunch before returning to Cornwall.

Monday We travel from Cornwall in the morning and make our way to Cumbria. We arrive in time for dinner.

Tuesday Our day begins with a ride over the rugged Kirkstone Pass as we head for Ullswater – often considered to be one of Britains most beautiful lakes. We follow the shore road as our journey continues to the town of Keswick. Later we make our way south to Grasmere, the pretty village which was home to the poet Wordsworth.

Wednesday Bowness-on-Windermere will be our destination today. You will have a gentle morning cruise on Lake Windermere before free time to enjoy the lovely town. After lunch we rejoin our coach and enjoy a visit to the “Auld Grey Town of Kendal” before returning to our hotel for an afternoon tea.

Thursday Today we head for Ulverston, famed for it’s Laurel and Hardy Museum and replica of The Eddystone Lighthouse. It is market day in Ulverston and you can browse the stalls and enjoy lunch before a scenic afternoon journey taking in the pretty village of Hawkshead and the banks of Conniston Water.

Friday After breakfast we say farewell to the Cumbria Grand Hotel and enjoy the journey back to Cornwall.

Sunday We travel to Newcastle arriving at our hotel to a welcome warm drink.

Monday This morning we travel via the coast and the towns of South Shields, Whitburn and Seaburn before turning inland to the ancient and historic City of Durham. Acclaimed as a World Heritage Site it is dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral and sits high above the River Wear.

Tuesday Today we have a leisurely morning in Newcastle with a chance to see the city. Later we meet at the rejuvenated quayside for a fabulous cruise on the River Tyne, with expert commentary. The cruise takes you under many of the iconic Tyne bridges.

Wednesday The magnificent Alnwick Castle will be our destination today. The castle has featured in several Harry Potter films and also Downton Abbey. Explore the wonderful interior with its sumptuous State Rooms before heading outside to the beautifully landscaped garden with its many unique features, sculptures and infamous Poison Garden.

Thursday We travel even further north today and during our travels we cross the spectacular causeway to Holy Island. This peaceful and unique village is home to the mysterious Lindisfarne Castle. We also visit Bamburgh, where there will be time to visit the mighty castle on the beach or the Grace Darling Museum.

Friday After breakfast we leave Newcastle and begin our journey home.

Sunday We travel from Cornwall to Lancashire where we have an overnight stop at the Hallmark Hotel Preston Leyland.

Monday Our journey today takes us north into the Scottish Highlands and on to Fort William. Here we enjoy a Scottish welcome at the Alexandra Hotel.

Tuesday The highlight of our tour, we join the Jacobite Railway. Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, we board at Fort William and follow a memorable journey to Mallaig taking in impressive extremes including the highest mountain in Britain and the Glenfinnan Viaduct otherwise known as the ‘Harry Potter bridge’. There will be time in Mallaig before we meet our coach to return to our hotel.

Wednesday This morning we have a trip to the lovely town of Oban. Enjoy the beautiful views across to the Island of Kerrera and beyond before strolling down to Argyll Square with its attractive floral displays and pretty coffee shops. Our afternoon is free to discover the town of Fort William.

Thursday This morning we visit the Highland capital of Inverness. Nestled between mountain and sea this small city delights visitors with its warm welcome and beautiful old town. In the afternoon we have a one hour cruise on Loch Ness with stunning views of the iconic Urquhart Castle ruins.

Friday Our last breakfast in Scotland before we make our way back to England. We have an overnight break at the Hallmark Hotel Preston Leyland.

Saturday Leaving Preston we make the journey back to Cornwall arriving home in the evening.

Take a seat in the Lanxess Arena to enjoy the unique performances that make up the colourful and unique spectacle that is promised to all who watch. Thursday We leave Cornwall early in the morning and travel to Dover for our ferry crossing to Calais. Our journey takes us through France and into Holland where we settle into our hotel in Valkenburg.

Friday This morning we have a relaxed start to the day before we head into Germany. Our afternoon will be free to enjoy the lovely town of Cologne on the banks of the Rhine. Germany’s oldest city is home to innumerable historical treasures, world-famous museums and an active art scene. There will be time to enjoy a meal before we go to the Lanxess Arena for the André Rieu concert. This spectacular showman is joined by the Johann Strauss Orchestra, a choir and a number of impressive soloists. See for yourself why André Rieu has been one of the world’s most popular live acts for a number of years!

Saturday Our morning will be free in the historic town of Valkenburg. This beautiful historic town is known for its underground caves where Romans once mined Marl. In the afternoon we visit the three countries point, the highest point in the Netherlands with views across Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Sunday Today we visit Maastricht and get a taste of its highlights from the water as we enjoy a one hour cruise. There will be time for lunch and further exploration of this city that is home to ancient fortifications and cherishes its rich past. Later we visit the atmospheric WWII American cemetery at Margraten.

Monday We check out of our hotel and travel to Calais for our ferry crossing to Dover. We then return home to Cornwall.
