You will be amazed to find that such a small country has such a lot to offer. The cobbled streets and picture perfect canals are only part of the story. The Flemish always offer a warm welcome and you can easily combine relaxation with culture. We explore some of the places that remain poignant reminders of the battles that took place in the area as well as the beautiful towns and canal cities.
The four star Best Western Ambassador Menin is in the centre of the town just a short walk from the market place. Rooms offer a high level of comfort and the hotel has a lift.
Itinerary
Monday We have an early start from Cornwall. We travel to Dover and board the ferry to Calais. Once in France we make our way to Ypres. We will have a welcome drink on arrival at our hotel.
Tuesday Our day will be spent travelling the gentle landscape surrounding Ypres and discovering more about the conflict that shaped our history. During the day we will visit Tyne Cot cemetery, The Passchendaele Memorial Museum and have free time in Ypres to explore the pretty medieval city that has endured incredible highs and lows. Tonight we will have an early dinner to allow you to see The Last Post at The Menin Gate at 8pm. Every evening since 1929 the traffic has stopped and the bugle has sounded in this moving and emotive display.
Wednesday Bruge will be our destination today. This much loved city is considered to be one of the best preserved cities in Europe and represents the finer points of the Belgian lifestyle. We will begin with a guided walking tour which is an excellent way to discover the varying aspects of this beautiful city. You will have the afternoon free to enjoy the famous canals, historical heart, and rich culture.
Thursday Today we will have a day tour to Ghent. After years of lying in the shadow of Antwerp and Bruges, Ghent, with its quaint cobbled streets and winding canals, is finally starting to get the recognition that it deserves. Its 900-plus listed buildings are testament to the fact that not only did it survive the World Wars pretty much intact, but also that it was a very wealthy city in medieval times.
Friday After breakfast we will make our way back to Calais for the return ferry to the UK. We will arrive back in Cornwall later in the evening.
