SCOTTISH MARCHES

The Scottish Borders is not just renowned for its outstanding natural beauty but also for being an area with a colourful and turbulent history. A journey through the rolling hills in this seductive area is a journey through time.

The De Vere Barony Castle is an imposing historic hotel but its historic facade hides a modern interior with excellent facilities including swimming pool, jacuzi and sauna. All rooms have hairdryer, TV and tea/coffee making facilities and most are accessible by lift.

Itinerary

Sunday We travel from Cornwall to Preston where we have an overnight stop at The Holiday Inn Preston.

Monday After breakfast we will travel the relatively short distance to Settle Station where we board the train on the Settle to Carlisle Railway. Our journey will cover 72 miles of track with breathtaking views, 17 major viaducts and 14 tunnels. The train will take us to Carlisle where you will have free time before we continue our journey to Scotland.
Tuesday We will start the day by travelling through the border countryside to Floors Castle. Here we will discover the interior, gardens & grounds of the largest inhabited castle in Scotland. Later in the day we will travel to the famous town of Coldstream. Situated where the River Tweed forms a natural boundary between Scotland and England the town’s history arose because of its location on the border and the continual feuding between the two nations. You will also have free time in Peebles, now a popular tourist destination, it once played a role in the woollen industry and one mill does still remain in this picturesque town.
Wednesday Today we will enjoy the city of Edinburgh. There is so much to do in the beautiful city. Holyrood Palace, Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle to name a few.

Thursday
Our coach will take us to New Lanarkshire and The Clyde Valley. Whilst here we will visit the New Lanark World Heritage Site and discover the fascinating history of the impressive cotton mill village and the life and times of mill manager and social pioneer Robert Owen. We include a passport ticket so that you can visit the Annie McLeod Experience’, working textile machinery, the Millworkers’ House, Robert Owen’s House, the Roof Garden, the Village Store and the attractions in Robert Owen’s School. Later in the day we will visit the medieval town of Biggar.

Friday Sadly it’s time to say goodbye to Peebles and begin our journey south. We will have an overnight stop in Preston.

Saturday After breakfast we make our way back to Cornwall arriving during the evening.
