MIDLAND JOURNEYS & MEMORIES

The evolution of transport has been romanticised over the years and nowhere pays homage to this more than the midland counties which as world leaders in many industries, have a rich history and a unique story to tell. Our excursions and visits reflect various facets of this marvelous heritage.

The three star Sketchley Grange Hotel is an elegant country property nestled in the heart of England and combines the perfect blend of past and present. Bedrooms are designed with comfort and convenience in mind and hotel facilities include lift and spa with indoor pool.

Itinerary

Monday We depart in the morning and travel to the midlands with a leisurely lunch break along the way. On arrival we enjoy a hot drink.

Tuesday Our day begins at the Museum of British Road Transport at Coventry, home to over 400 artefacts and thousands of items of memorabilia from the golden age of cars and cycles. There is time for lunch or to see the Cathedral before a visit to Baddesley Clinton House. This atmospheric moated home has been a sanctuary for years, with priest holes, peaceful gardens and romantic lakes.

Wednesday Today we take to the water aboard ‘Vagabond’, an elegant vintage motor launch, for a trip on the Grand Union Canal, seeing the Foxton flight of 10 locks and its surrounding peaceful countryside. Later we transfer to rails and the Great Central Railway. This is the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other – just as it was when steam ruled the rails.

Thursday Our coach takes us to Birmingham where we have a guided tour of the lovely Jewellery Quarter, a quaint gem in this major city. From here we head for the Black Country Living Museum where we learn of life in a village of the first industrial landscape anywhere in the world.

Friday After breakfast we travel to Stratford upon Avon, a historic town that had less of an industrial influence and is famed for its links to Shakespeare and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company. We travel back to Cornwall in the afternoon.
