WYE VALLEY & WELSH BORDERS

Between the River Severn and the Welsh borderlands lies the enchanting area Forest of Dean and Wye Valley which combine to host one of the country’s most scenic landscapes. We traverse the border of England and Wales for a taste of heritage at the Blaenavon World Heritage Site.

We once again stay at the three star Bells Hotel which is surrounded by its own golf course and located close to the centre of Coleford. Many rooms are on the ground floor and all offer hot drink facilities, TV and telephone.

Itinerary

Sunday Departing Cornwall in the morning we make our way towards the Severn Bridge crossing. We enjoy a break for lunch in the maritime city of Bristol and arrive at the Bells Hotel later in the day.

Monday We have time in the attractive town of Hereford. Straddling the River Wye, the town is home to a number of rare treasures including Mappa Mundi and beautiful Cathedral. Later we head into the Wye Valley, a pretty area known for its natural river scenery and wooded expanses. We have a cruise past Symonds Yat on the River Wye.

Tuesday This morning we visit the Blaenavon World Heritage Site and have a guided tour of The Big Pit, a working coal mine until 1980 before later opening as an industrial heritage museum. We will have the opportunity to take a free tour giving an insight into the life of a coal miner and the perils involved. In the afternoon we visit the market town of Brecon where the views of the mountain range are spectacular.

Wednesday Following the twists and turns of the Wye Valley, today’s journey will take us to the ruins of Tintern Abbey, the oldest surviving British castle. Our day also includes a visit to Chepstow and a ride on the pretty Dean Forest Railway.

Thursday After breakfast we travel to the beautiful city of Gloucester for time to enjoy the attractive harbourside before returning to Cornwall.
