The Durham Dales is a peaceful landscape of moors and hills, valleys and meandering rivers, dotted with picturesque villages and pretty market towns. In contrast the historic city of Durham is bustling and vibrant with a friendly feel.

The three star rated Blackwell Grange Hotel is a beautiful 17th century mansion peacefully situated in acres of grounds. Excellent facilities include leisure club with indoor pool, spa and sauna. All bedrooms have TV, telephone, hairdryer and hot drink facilities.

Sunday Leaving Cornwall we travel to County Durham and arrive at Blackwell Grange Hotel early in the evening.

Monday We head to North Yorkshire and visit Northallerton on market day. Browse the wares and perhaps visit the Joe Cornish Gallery – see a stunning display of photography of the North. We then visit historic Richmond, a town that has inspired painters and poets, past and present.

Tuesday After breakfast we drive to Alston, in the High Pennines for a ride on the South Tynedale Railway, England’s highest narrow gauge line. From here we make for the lovely town of Hexham where it is market day.  This afternoon we return via Castleside to visit Raby Castle and Gardens, one of the country’s finest medieval castles.

Wednesday We begin with a trip to ‘Barny’ with time to explore the town in which Dickens immortalised ‘Dothboys Hall’. We then visit the excellent Bowes Museum, one of County Durham’s biggest surprises housed in a majestic French-style chateau. Our final visit today is to Locomotion, an outpost of the National Railway Museum containing locomotives, artefacts and memorabilia dating back to the birth of the railways.

Thursday This morning we go to the historic Durham, an acclaimed World Heritage Site. Early in the afternoon we visit the acclaimed Beamish Open Air Museum, a working recreation of life in the 1800’s. You can wander the old shops, travel on a tram and go back to school.

Friday We leave after breakfast to make the journey home to Cornwall.
