Between the River Severn and the Welsh borderlands lies the enchanting area of the Forest of Dean and the beautiful Wye Valley. They combine harmoniously to give some of the most scenic landscapes you will find on any holiday. We traverse the border of England and Wales on a relaxing and varied tour.
We return to the three star Bells Hotel which is surrounded by a golf course and located close to the centre of Coleford. Many rooms are on the ground floor and all offer hot drink tray, TV and telephone.
Itinerary
Sunday Departing Cornwall in the morning we make our way towards the Severn crossing. We enjoy a lunch break en route and arrive at the Bells Hotel later in the day.
Monday We have time in the attractive town of Hereford. Straddling the River Wye, the town is home to a number of rare treasures including Mappa Mundi and beautiful Cathedral. Later we head into the Wye Valley, a pretty area known for its natural river scenery and wooded expanses. We have a pleasurable cruise past Symonds Yat on the River Wye.
Tuesday Following the twists and turns of the Wye Valley, today’s journey will take us to the ruins of Tintern Abbey, the oldest surviving British castle. We have time for lunch in the pretty town of Cinderford before a visit to the lovely Westbury Court Garden. This National Trust gem is the only restored Dutch style water garden in the country. Visitors can explore canals, clipped hedges and working 17th-century vegetable plots and discover many old varieties of fruit trees.
Wednesday Our day begins with a morning ride into Wales and a visit to the Big Pitt National Coal Museum in the Brecon Beacons. This award winning museum shows what life was like for the thousands of men who worked at the coal face. Later we cross back over the border for a ride on the pretty Dean Forest Railway.
Thursday After breakfast we leave our hotel and head to Cheddar Gorge where you can explore one of Britain’s most spectacular natural landmarks and have lunch before returning to Cornwall.
