Normandy is a beautiful and varied region with many facets. Its dramatic coastline of white-chalk cliffs and WWII beachheads sit in contrast with the colourful beauty of the many inland gardens. The Calvados region is also known as a gourmet delight thanks to its fertile soil and highly developed agricultural skills.

The three star Mercure Hotel Lisieux is located in a peaceful setting on the outskirts of this charming town and makes an ideal base to explore the region. This modern yet cosy hotel offers a warm welcome and excellent facilities. It has a lift and an outdoor swimming pool.

Sunday We leave Cornwall in the morning and travel to Portsmouth for our ferry to Caen. Dinner this evening will not be included and we suggest you dine on board the ferry. We arrive at our hotel late in the evening.

Monday After a leisurely breakfast we travel to the charming port town of Honfleur on the beautiful Cote Fleurie. The town is known for its local artists, distinctive ports and wonderful seafood. We return to Lisieux in the afternoon. The town is not only the capital of the Pays d’Auge region but is also considered the second most important pilgrimage town in France.

Tuesday Today we have a ‘Taste of Normandy’. Our day begins with a visit to the 100-year-old Graindorge Cheese Dairy, to learn the art of the cheesemaker and taste the samples. We then visit the Jardins du Pays d’Auge where four acres of themed gardens sit alongside the ‘eco museum’. Later we continue to Calvados Pierre Huet, for a guided tour and tasting.

Wednesday The port city of Caen will be our first stop. Here you can plunge into Caen’s fascinating history by visiting the resting site of William The Conqueror or the emotive Caen Memorial Museum, renowned as one of the best WWII museums in France. Later we travel to the coastal town of Ouistreham and Sword Beach, the most easterly of the D-Day beaches.

Thursday This morning we have an early departure from our hotel to catch the ferry back to the UK. Breakfast will be included on board. We dock at lunchtime and make the journey back to Cornwall.
