Join us as we explore not only the mesmerising Lake District but also the rugged Scottish borderlands that adjoin it. We include two scenic rail journeys that offer unique and unmissable views that would not be seen by road.
The three star standard historic Gilsland Hall Hotel is set in acres of manicured gardens and offers spectacular views. All rooms have TV and hot drink facilities. There is a lift to some floors and a fantastic programme of entertainment throughout our stay.
Itinerary
Sunday Leaving in the morning we travel to Cumbria and arrive at our hotel late in the afternoon.
Monday This morning we start our day in Carlisle and join the mainline train which follows the Cumbrian coastline through Maryport and Whitehaven. The stunning sea views stay with us to Ravenglass. Here we have time for coffee before rejoining the coach and journeying through wonderful Cumbrian scenery to the attractive towns of Keswick and Cockermouth.
Tuesday After breakfast we take a tour of the magnificent Lake District National Park. Our tour will take us over passes, through beautiful valleys and into traditional Lakeland villages. We include visits to Ullswater and Derwent Water.
Wednesday We travel into the Yorkshire Dales and enjoy breathtaking scenery. Our journey will take us to Kirkby Lonsdale, past the immense Ribblehead Viaduct to Settle. Here we board the most spectacular main line railway in England – the Settle to Carlisle line. Towering viaducts, bridges, long deep tunnels, lovingly kept station gardens all help to make this one of the best loved lines in the country. At Carlisle we have time to explore before we rejoin our coach.
Thursday Today we cross the border into Scotland and enjoy the Celtic feel of the historic town of Dumfries, the famous Gretna Green village and the excellent Devils Porridge Museum. The latter is a renowned attraction dedicated to telling the story of how this once quiet area flourished into a hub of wartime activity.
Friday After breakfast we leave and begin our homeward journey and return to Cornwall.
