NORTHUMBRIA & HOLY ISLAND

Northumbria is known as the land of Kings. It is awash with incredible landmarks, beautiful landscapes and historic sites. A rich and adventurous past has been preserved and brought back to life for us and this full and fascinating tour will be a journey of discovery of the Northern Roman frontier.

Itinerary

Sunday Leaving Cornwall we head north to Newcastle arriving early in the evening.

Monday This morning we head for the coast and South Shields, home of the late Catherine Cookson, continuing past Marsden Bay, Whitburn and Seaburn before turning inland across to the ancient and historic City of Durham. There will be time to explore this World Heritage Site.

Tuesday Our day begins with a morning visit to Hexham, just south of Hadrians Wall. Once the haunt of marauding Vikings 1300 years ago, nowadays Hexham proudly holds the title of England’s favourite market town. Later we return to Newcastle quayside for a fabulous cruise on the River Tyne with expert commentary.

Wednesday Today we take the road north, past Blyth and Ashington, to Amble, Warkworth and historic Alnwick where we visit the magnificent castle. Enjoy the sumptuous State Rooms and beautifully landscaped Alnwick Garden which has many unique features including the infamous Poison Garden and one of the largest tree houses in the world.                                               

Thursday Our excursion takes us to the north of the county across the causeway to Holy Island and the mysterious Lindisfarne Castle. We return to Bamburgh, with its mighty castle on the beach, for a break, maybe to visit the majestic castle on the beach, or the Grace Darling Museum.

Friday Today is free to discover Newcastle. This vibrant city has much to see and can be explored on foot, by local tour bus or from the water.

Saturday We leave Newcastle and make the journey back to Cornwall arriving home during the evening.
