The stunning Salzkammergut region is Austrias beautiful lake district and it boasts sensational natural vistas ranging from extraordinary mountains to picturesque valleys. All interspersed with shimmering bodies of topaz blue waters. Our tour reveals the real Austria to us as we take in a range of the traditional, idyllic villages as well as famous and impressive cities.

The Hotel Försterhof, St Wolfgang is a traditional four star hotel which is elegantly decorated throughout and is located close to the shores of Lake Wolfgang and the heart of the village. The hotel boasts its own private beach and Austrian style rooms with good facilities.

Friday We travel from Cornwall to Dover where we board the ferry to Calais and arrive at the Altia hotel, Lille later in the afternoon.

Saturday Today we continue our journey and travel to our second overnight hotel, the Mercure Stuttgart Boblingen.

Sunday After breakfast we rejoin our coach and cross the final border to Austria. We arrive at the Hotel Försterhof in the afternoon to a warm Austrian welcome.

Monday Today we explore St Wolfgang. Our hosts take us on a short guided walk of the village before taking us to join the steepest cog train in Austria, the Schafberg Mountain Railway. On a clear day panoramic views of sparkling lakes of Austria and Germany are framed by majestic mountains.

Tuesday Our day will be spent in the home of the ‘Sound of Music’, Salzburg. The old town is a maze of charming pedestrian alleyways with many famous and historic landmarks. To enable us to get our bearings we enjoy a two hour guided walking tour after which we can explore the city at leisure.

Wednesday The delightful spa town of Bad Ischl is our first stop and where we enjoy a guided tour of  Kaiservilla where Emperors of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy spent their summers. There will be time for lunch before moving on to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hallstatt Saltmines. Here we take the cable car to the summit for yet more amazing views.

Thursday We have a coach tour of the Salzkammergutm. Our travels take us via Ebensee and along the impressive fjord-like Lake Traunsee to Gmunden before continuing on towards the Mondsee, one of the most unspoilt lakes in the region and one of the most well-known filming locations for the ‘Sound of Music’. We also include a visit to the traffic-free village of St Gilgen, connected to Mozart’s family, and the village which provided inspiration for much of his work, before making our way back to St Wolfgang.

Friday Sadly we leave our hotel and Austria and travel to Metz for our overnight stay at the Mercure Metz Centre.

Saturday We depart our hotel after breakfast and make the journey home to Cornwall arriving later in the evening.
