Stunning castles, glorious gardens and stately homes – Kent is a treasure trove of historic attractions and scented sites are all waiting to be explored. As England’s oldest county, Kent tells rich and compelling tales of monarchs, religion and wars that are at odds with the peaceable ambience of the Garden of England.

The three star Burlington Hotel stands in its own grounds overlooking the English Channel. It has a warm Victorian charm whilst offering modern facilities. The town of Folkestone is just a ten minute walk away.

Sunday We travel from Cornwall to Kent and settle in to our coastal hotel.

Monday Our day begins with a visit to Brogdale, home of the National Fruit Collection with over 4000 varieties of fruit trees. We have a guided tour of the orchards which are a living history and heritage of fruit. Our afternoon will be spent in Canterbury where the magnificent Cathedral has been attracting pilgrims for centuries.

Tuesday Today we enjoy almost nine centuries of history and explore hundreds of acres of beautiful parkland and gardens at Leeds Castle. This property has been used by many monarchs including Henry VIII and is often referred to as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’. There are a number of excellent displays, exhibitions and museums to peruse.

Wednesday This morning we travel roads that link Kent’s famous Cinque Ports. We journey through Hythe and New Romney and on to the lovely cobbled town of Rye. In the afternoon we visit Great Dixter House and gardens, the family home of gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd. Parts of the house date back to the 15th century and the garden is a place of pilgrimage for horticulturists from across the world.

Thursday We make our way along the coast to Dover and a very different castle. Dover Castle is home to a wartime hospital, tunnels and a WWI Fire Command Post. This tremendous fortress played a key part of history up to the end of World War Two. Experience the courtly intrigue of monarchs before going underground to the sights and sounds of an authentic war time operation.

Friday Leaving the lovely county of Kent we sit back and enjoy our journey back to Cornwall.
