MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL & NORTH WEST HISTORY

In this industrial area of England the rich heritage shaped all aspects of life and landscapes. Our holiday takes us on a journey of discovery to take in many aspects of the past reflected in a naturally beautiful or carefully regenerated way. From the gentle beauty of the Peak District to the bustle of one of England’s largest canals.

Itinerary

Monday Leaving in the morning we travel to the Shrigley Hall Hotel arriving later in the afternoon.

Tuesday Today we travel through the beautiful Peak District. Our scenic journey takes in the spa town of Buxton, the Eyam Plague Museum and Masson Mills, where the fascinating collection allows us to experience the genuine atmosphere of a working 18th century cotton mill in its original setting.

Wednesday Our first destination will be the Imperial War Museum North. Set on Manchester’s unique waterfront and housed in one of the most unconventional buildings in the UK, it is one of the world’s leading museums of war. In the afternoon we visit Dunham Massey, an 18th century gem that played its part in the First World War as a hospital. Both the house and gardens have an interesting story to tell.

Thursday This morning the highlight of our tour awaits. We join our Mersey Ferries ship for a six hour cruise on Britains grandest canal. The awe-inspiring cruise from Salford Quays to Liverpool gives spectacular scenery and a sense of how the canals construction shaped the north west.

Friday We depart in the morning and enjoy a break for lunch in the fascinating city of Worcester before returning to Cornwall.
