New Tour

The beautiful county of Durham is a delight to visit at this festive time, and whilst we are enjoying this festive treat we step into North Yorkshire across the scenic Cleveland Hills and soak up the moody, dramatic countryside. A visit to the superb Locomotion at Shildon makes a nice contrast. Our evenings will be filled with good food, great company, lively entertainment and festive cheer.

The three star standard Blackwell Grange Hotel is a beautiful 17th century mansion peacefully situated in nine acres of its own grounds on the outskirts of Darlington. Hotel facilities include leisure club with indoor pool, spa and saunas. All bedrooms have free wi-fi, TV, telephone, hairdryer and hot drink facilities.

Friday Leaving Cornwall in the morning we travel to County Durham and arrive at our hotel late in the afternoon to a welcome drink.

Saturday This morning we have a short ride to Shildon where we visit Locomotion, an outpost of the excellent National Railway Museum in York. This area was the birthplace of railways and the museum offers lots to view including the Royal train. There will be time for lunch and to explore the historic town of Darlington before we return to our hotel for dinner and evening entertainment.

Sunday – Christmas Eve We have a scenic tour via Bilsdale ‘Little Switzerland’ to Thirsk. This charming Yorkshire market town was home to the famous writer and vet James Herriott. Later we travel on to Helmsley, the only market town in the NYM National Park. Tonight we have a performance of carols by singers from a local church.

Monday – Christmas Day Merry Christmas! Enjoy a relaxing morning, open presents with friends and maybe take a stroll before Christmas lunch is served. This afternoon listen to the Queens speech, maybe watch a film, and get ready for tonight’s buffet, followed by bingo, a quiz and music from the resident DJ.

Tuesday – Boxing Day After a leisurely breakfast we travel to the ancient city of Durham. Acclaimed as a World Heritage Site and dominated by the magnificent Cathedral and Norman Castle it sits dramatically above the River Wear. Downhill from the Castle you can trace Durham’s mediaeval layout as you thread through the narrow winding streets and snickets. We have the chance to explore and maybe visit the Cathedral or have a spot of lunch before returning in the afternoon to enjoy the hotel facilities. This evening we have more entertainment to round off the day.

Wednesday After breakfast we leave County Durham and make the journey home to Cornwall.
