Angus Coast & Balmoral Itinerary
Saturday We depart Cornwall in the morning and travel to Blackburn for our overnight stay at the Hampton by Hilton Blackburn.
Sunday This morning we make our way into Scotland and travel to the peaceful, North East coastal town of Montrose to settle into our hotel.
Monday We spend today at stunning Balmoral, the Scottish home of the Royal Family. We discover the castle’s fascinating history, famous residents and notable visitors as well as exploring the grand ballroom and informative exhibitions. Outside, the beautiful formal gardens feature a large kitchen garden, a range of Victorian glasshouses full of flowering pot plants and a water garden.
Tuesday This morning we travel the short distance to the 18th century House of Dun, an elegant Georgian country house designed with baroque extravagance. We enjoy a guided tour to reveal the history of the grand house from fine family furnishings to the sounds and smells of a Georgian kitchen. The formal gardens have wonderful views and highlights include a stunning rose bower and ancient sundial. In the afternoon we visit Newton Farm, a family-run working farm in rural Angus, which is home to the iconic Highland cow. We enjoy a guided tour, discover what daily life is like on a Scottish farm and have the opportunity to pet and feed the animals. We round off our visit with some home baked treats and tea.
Wednesday Today we travel to Aberdeen and the Gordon Highlanders Museum, which celebrates the historic story of the Gordon Highlanders regiment. Historical artefacts, memorabilia, weapons, regimental silverware and a replica WWI trench tell a moving story. The rest of our day is at leisure in the ‘Granite City’ of Aberdeen. See the impressive turreted Town House in Union Street, the castellated Citadel at The Castlegate and the striking gothic Marischal College, the world’s second largest granite structure.
Thursday Leaving Montrose after breakfast we travel down through Scotland and return to England. Our overnight stop will be at the Mercure Bolton Georgian House Hotel.
Friday We leave Preston and make the journey back to Cornwall.
