The great train rides of Wales are a special way of seeing some of the best scenery in the British Isles. Most of these heritage railways originally carried Welsh slate from the quarries but they now provide us with charming journeys of nostalgia and beauty.
Itinerary
Great Little Trains of Snowdonia Itinerary
Monday Departing from Cornwall in the morning we travel to North Wales. We settle into our hotel before dinner.
Tuesday Our first visit today takes us to the shores of Cardigan Bay and Portmeirion, the setting for the cult TV series ‘The Prisoner’. From here we drive to Betws-y-Coed where we have time for lunch. In the afternoon we enjoy a ride on the Bala Lake Railway, a delightful journey alongside Bala Lake, through the beautiful Snowdonia National Park.
Wednesday Today we join the Llanberis Lake Railway for a different yet enjoyable lakeside train ride. There will then be time to explore the lovely town of Llanberis and have lunch. In the afternoon we have a scenic journey across the Menai Strait and onto the Isle of Anglesey for a visit to the town of Beaumaris.
Thursday We head for the Royal town of Caernarfon situated on the shores of the Menai Strait. Here we board the Welsh Highland Railway, the UKs longest heritage railway. We travel along this scenic line to Bedgelert. In the afternoon we join the Ffestiniog Railway from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. This historic journey climbs over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests.
Friday After breakfast we begin the journey home to Cornwall, arriving in the evening.
