North East & Lincolnshire Itinerary
Monday We depart in the morning and travel to North East England arriving late afternoon at the Blackwell Grange Hotel. We enjoy tea and biscuits on arrival.
Tuesday Our day begins with a drive to historic Richmond sitting high above the River Swale. One of the many interesting places to visit is the Richmondshire Museum, which houses the ‘set’ from ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Later we join the ‘Wensleydale Railway’ for a nostalgic, rural ride through the North Yorkshire countryside from Leyburn to Leeming Bar. Later we head to the traditional and charming town of Thirsk, home of James Herriot.
Wednesday We join a local coach today for a visit to Raby Castle. This 14th century fortress has nine towers and is one of the finest and best-preserved medieval castles in the North East. Outside there is a picturesque walled garden and 200 acres of landscaped deer park to enjoy. The latter part of our afternoon is free to enjoy our hotel surroundings.
Thursday This morning we head to South Shields, home of the late Catherine Cookson. Here we meet our guide to begin a tour of the wonderful coast past Marsden Bay, Whitburn and Seaburn with guided commentary. There will be time in South Shields for lunch before visiting the lovely city of Durham, a historical treasure trove of castles, riversides and industrial heritage.
Friday Leaving Darlington, we travel to the Historic City of York, home to the national railway museum and the famous York Minster! There will be time to stroll the Shambles or walk the city walls before we make our way to Lincolnshire, our second base. We arrive at the Olde Barn Hotel to a welcome hot drink.
Saturday Today we head to Stamford, best known for its 17th and 18th century stone buildings and timber framed houses. It has become a popular location for many period dramas such as Pride and Prejudice. Later we visit Belton House, a country estate with formal Italian and Dutch gardens and historic deer park.
Sunday After breakfast we leave Lincolnshire and make our way back to Cornwall.
