Rutland & Barnsdale Description

A tour taking in a glorious area of the Shires countryside. We revel in the beauty of Barnsdale Gardens and step back in time with a ride on the traditional Vagabond canal cruiser. From historic gems to ‘foodie heaven’, there is something for everyone.  

Rutland & Barnsdale Itinerary

Monday Departing in the morning we travel to Rockingham and arrive late in the afternoon at our hotel. Tea and biscuits will be served on arrival.

Tuesday We begin today with time in Stamford, a town with a unique blend of history and stunning Georgian architecture. There is time for lunch before we visit the famous Barnsdale Gardens, familiar to many TV viewers of Gardeners World and as home of the late Geoff Hamilton. The gardens comprise thirty seven individual gardens all blended together into one eight acre garden. 

Wednesday This morning we head for the little village of Foxton where we board ‘Vagabond’ for a cruise on the Grand Union Canal, seeing the Foxton flight of 10 locks, and gently passing through the peaceful countryside. This afternoon as we visit Boughton House, one of the great treasure houses of Europe; the collection here is staggering! The house also featured in the film ‘Les Miserables’.

Thursday Our day begins with a visit to the town of Melton Mowbray, a bustling market town known as the ‘Rural Capital of Food’. Perhaps visit the Melton Carnegie Museum to see why the town gave its name to the famous pork pie. After lunch we travel to the lovely Rutland Water, thought to be the largest man made body of water in Europe, it is a wild habitat and home to many wildfowl and breeding ospreys. 

Friday After breakfast we leave and begin our journey home.
