Holiday Tour Details
Scottish Borders Description
Just a short hop over the English border lie the pleasant Scottish borderlands. Often overlooked, this wild and beautiful land has a rich history and a romance that often belies the peacefulness that we now enjoy. We explore both sides of the border whilst staying in the famous Scottish village of Gretna Green.
Scottish Borders Itinerary
Tuesday We depart Cornwall in the morning and travel to Scotland where there will be a welcome dram on arrival.
Wednesday Stepping back into England today we roughly follow the path of Hadrians Wall to Chesters Roman Fort one the Roman Empire’s most northern outposts and the most complete Roman cavalry fort in Britain. During the day we also visit the historic market town of Hexham which is clustered attractively around the Abbey.
Thursday We journey through Kielder Forest, England’s largest forest, and break for morning coffee at the visitor centre on the way. Later we visit the town of Jedburgh. This former Royal Burgh was a 17th century frontier town in cross-border raids and now boasts excellent historic attractions including the Mary Queen of Scotts Visitor Centre and the Castle Jail Museum.
Friday Today we begin with a scenic tour into the Lake District and enjoy a cruise on Ullswater. There will be time for coffee before we visit the border city of Carlisle, a significant place since well before Roman times. There will be time to visit the medieval cathedral or the magnificent castle.
Saturday This morning is free to explore Gretna Green and we enjoy an included visit to the Blacksmith visitor attraction. In the afternoon we visit the excellent Devils Porridge Museum which tells the story of HM Factory Gretna, the largest munitions factory in the world during the First World War.
Sunday After breakfast we cross back into the UK and make our way home to Cornwall.
