Itinerary
Journeys of County Durham and North Yorkshire Itinerary
Sunday We depart in the morning and travel to the North East to the Blackwell Grange Hotel. A welcome hot drink and biscuits will be served on arrival.
Monday Our coach takes us over the moors, through picturesque Hutton-le-Hole to Pickering. Here we join the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for a steam train journey through rugged moorland to Whitby, passing through Goathland or ‘TV’s Aidensfield’. Whitby is a maritime town, bursting with character and is quite unique.
Tuesday This morning we make our way to the magnificent medieval city of Durham. There will be time to visit the opulent cathedral or stroll the historic streets. After lunch we visit the wonderful Bowes Museum, an outstanding collection of art, fashion and design housed in a beautiful French-style public museum set in gardens and parkland. It is also home to the iconic Silver Swan.
Wednesday Our first visit today is to Preston Park Museum. Set in attractive parkland, the museum houses a delightful collection of memorabilia from times gone by and a cobbled Victorian street. From here we join the ‘Teesside Princess’ for a gentle cruise on the River Tees travelling through beautiful countryside to the cobbled town of Yarm, famous for its awe-inspiring railway viaduct. In the afternoon we take a scenic drive through Bilsdale, known as ‘Little Switzerland’, to Helmsley with its 12th century castle. Our return takes us over the moors and the Vale of York.
Thursday After a leisurely breakfast we make the journey to Auckland Castle, home to the Bishops of Durham and one of the best-preserved Bishop’s Palaces in Europe. The castle staterooms are designed to tell the history and stories of the bishops that lived here. This afternoon we have included an all-access ticket to a range of the town centre attractions including art galleries, Faith Museum and the Auckland Tower where you can enjoy 360-degree views of the castle.
Friday After breakfast we leave and begin our journey home.
